As far as balance goes, I have no interest in that sort of thing. How hard was it to nail his voice? It is the motor of the story—it can be the twist at the end, the broad concept, the compelling change the character undergoes, the language or clever structure of a piece…whatever makes a story worth reading is its hook.
The way I saw it was: Mimicry is an easy skill. We have some idea of what the subject matter is, the primary theme the novel is going to explore.
Lots of people have written about it. You are setting the stage here, so paint a nick mamatas writing advice columns, give us the backdrop, and start the thread or threads that will run through your narrative.
Lovecraft, and a harrowing time is had by all. And with Under My Roof being released, what Mamatas is known for is about to change. The things I heard as anecdotes -- the flip-outs, the sneering at any level of success other than their own, the posing, the incessant brown-nosing and validation-seeking oriented toward the faculty -- are too often the actual rhetorical currency of the program.
Category 3 beginnings have the author starting close to, at, or during the Inciting Incident. Next, set up Buffer. Oh, I guess you could call it genre fiction -- fantasy and horror -- written by someone who really came to the genre from all the wrong angles: Refer to some of his statements here and here, and here.
Straight away we know what this tale is about. In this story, and particularly in this beginning, there are no UFOs, no ghosts or full moons, no overt element of the fantastic.

This makes a bit more sense, I suppose—but for the newer writer who still has no idea how to determine the true start of the story, of what value is it to them?
And if she has a bit more time and is ready to take the next step I would recommend that she start thinking about how to create better content. It will be an interesting story that is immediately going places and will encourage readers to continue reading and keep turning those pages.
